Students and campus groups are trying to encourage more young voters to hit the polls on Election Day, since many are hesitant without knowing much about the candidates or voting procedures. "College kids are just learning what the system is all about," said Alexey Petrides (freshman-mechanical engineering). "It's important to get out and vote because we're a large majority.

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is undergoing leadership changes as it gets ready to hire a third assistant director. Kevin Kerr, the new director and most recently hired fraternity and sorority life employee, was hired in July to replace former director Scott Phelan. "Our goal was to find an experienced director [for] fraternity and sorority life who comes from a major institution with a sizable greek population and we were looking for someone with good interpersonal skills," said Art Carter, assistant vice president for student affairs.

Undergraduate Student Government (USG) executive members will continue to promote campus safety this year, including the on- and off-campus lighting initiative that was a major platform last year. USG President Galen Foulke said he would be extending last year's safety platform to include funding and staff for safety seminars sponsored by student organizations. Foulke said he supports the ongoing efforts to light the campus, but added that lighting does not prevent assaults or other crimes.

Students have found a new way to cut costs: buying textbooks online through Web sites like eBay. According to a survey of 500 college students conducted by eBay, 40 percent of the students have used the site to buy textbooks online, and more than 55 percent have shopped at www. half.

Some students studying East Asian and Middle Eastern cultures at Penn State feel that a lack of course availability is causing a roadblock as they pursue their fields of interest. Associate professor of East Asian history Gregory Smits said course selection for the East Asian studies major is "tight but not impossible. "

Penn State Republicans expressed political concerns about upcoming visit from the "Vote for Change Tour" to radio listeners in Philadelphia last night. College Republicans chairman Andy Banducci made a guest appearance on Dom Giordano's evening talk show on Philadelphia talk radio station WPHT-AM (1210). Before the interview, Banducci said he planned to discuss the "Vote For Change Tour" concert, agreeing with Penn State administration's recent decision to not promote or advertise the event.

Citing growing problems in the community with drugs, alcohol and domestic violence, District Justice Bradley Lunsford lead a panel last night in the first of four town hall meetings at Fairbrook United Methodist Church in Pennsylvania Furnace to discuss the issue. "I want to promote discussion beyond this meeting," Lunsford said. "Somewhere, I think someone has declared open season on our young people.

There's a new service invading campus and town for people who want an easier and more direct way to rent movies: DVD rental machines. There are two machines in the HUB-Robeson Center, on the ground and first floors, and one in Findlay Commons. "We have a one-year agreement to see their popularity.

Meet Flip and Z. Flip's on the right side, and Z's on the left. Flip's rather reserved, but Z is as chatty a fellow as you'll ever find.

Ashley Pederson closes in on 1,000 kills tonight as the Penn State women's volleyball team faces off with San Francisco. Pederson, a preseason All-Big Ten selection, sits just 16 kills shy of becoming the 16th player in Penn State history to reach 1,000. The Penn State record for most kills is 2,282 held by Lori Barberich from 1981-1984.

One of the few high points for Penn State's 2003 special teams was Derek Wake again soaring through the air to block a punt in the season opener against Temple. Defensive tackle Scott Paxson didn't exactly soar through the air when he got a hand on a field goal in last Saturday's opener against Akron, but after last season the Nittany Lions aren't counting style points. "Yeah, I definitely don't jump over the line," Paxson said.

ARTS

You can never go home again - unless you're The Clarks, that is. It wouldn't be a new semester at Penn State if State College didn't receive a visit from the Pittsburgh native rock band. The show will take place at 8 p.

By Collegian Staff Writers One of those chain fast food restaurants has some saying about eatin' great, even late. That idea, as it turns out, isn't such a novelty.

A week ago tonight, I drove the two hours to Wilkes-Barre with a couple of friends to see a gentleman by the name of Phil Elvrum play some songs in a club a little larger than my bedroom. I've been a fan of Elvrum's band The Microphones for a few years now, but I'd never had the chance to see him play live. The opportunity to see him in a tiny space an evening's drive from home (and by himself, although I didn't know it'd just be him beforehand) was, for me, impossible to avoid.

Sometimes we like things but we're not sure why. Such is the case with me and Swimfan . I saw Swimfan pretty much on a whim in the theater shortly after it came out, and have been mildly obsessed with it ever since.

Do you find yourself daydreaming about those days, oh say, two weeks ago when Paul Hamm made his comeback victory? Do you long for Blaine Wilson's cute tushie? Michael Phelps' fish-like abilities?

It's just about that time of year. Leaves are changing hues, days are growing shorter, harvests are being gathered and that age-old question is proposed: "Does she really think my tractor's sexy? "

They live together in squalid dirt habitats, can be extremely irritating to Penn State students at times and have been known to eat the food we all throw away -- they are University Park's underrepresented insect population. The pests are finally getting their moment in the spotlight this Saturday at the 11th Great Insect Fair in and around the Penn State Agricultural Arena on Park Avenue, across from Beaver Stadium. Gary Felton, entomology department head, said most people misunderstand insects.

National acts 40 Below Summer and Slitheryn will be joined by local group Kairos for an unforgettable perfomance at 9:30 p. m Monday at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave.

The Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra will be introducing a new and exciting season with their first performance 3 p. m. Sunday at Esber Recital Hall.

For those who are looking to have a serious discussion about issues that are affecting our world at this very moment, just check out the local cinema lineup. Now that you've had a good laugh, try checking out something else: the Human Rights Film Series. Sponsored by the Collective Information Alternative, the film series will begin its ninth semester at 7:30 tonight in the second-floor community room of the State College Municipal Building, 243 S.

Fun fact: People, including most college students, love to download music off of the Internet. Not so fun fact: Many, many people, including college students, have been affected by cancer. Members of the Asher Kahn Band, a trio of Penn State alumni, realized both and they're determined to use their music to help fight cancer.

Bar Bleu , 114 S. Garner St. , will feature karaoke with DJ Armani.
