Future Penn State defenders showcased in Big 33 game

Collegian Staff Writer

HERSHEY -- Somewhere between accepting a poster a loyal Butler fan crafted for him and discussing his impending Penn State football career, Pennsylvania defensive end Tyrell Sales acknowledged a familiar face Saturday night in Hersheypark Stadium after playing in the Big 33 Football Classic.

"Yo Poz," he yelled out to Penn State sophomore linebacker Paul Posluszny.

"Hey man, good game," Posluszny said, slapping five with his future defensive partner.

Though Sales played defensive end on Saturday, he hopes that he'll be back in his natural linebacker position -- practicing alongside Posluszny -- when he gets to Penn State. And two of his Pennsylvania teammates -- left defensive tackle A.Q. Shipley and linebacker Dontey Brown -- will be on the same side of the ball with him.

The trio showed promise Saturday night, as Brown recorded four solo tackles -- two of which were sacks for a combined loss of 11 yards -- the most of any Pennsylvania defender. Sales contributed four total tackles, with one solo effort, while Shipley assisted on five stops.

"They're just really good football players, and they're really gonna do special things for us," Posluszny said. "All three of them were up at Penn State, doing summer workouts, and they'll fit right in. I hope they do all have a chance to play right away."

For Sales, the shift to defensive end was a bit of a challenge, as he only had the one week of Big 33 preparation practices to settle into the position. While he showed his speed throughout the night in pressuring the quarterback, at times it was evident that he hadn't exactly mastered the moves of a defensive end.

"The view of the game was a little bit different; it took some time to adjust to," Sales said. "I was just trying to go on athleticism. I've only been playing for one week, so I don't have the moves."

But while he hopes he'll be able to settle into his expected outside linebacker position at Penn State, if the backers are too rich at the expense of the ends, he'd certainly be willing to make the switch.

"It might be something I do down the road," Sales said. "I'd be comfortable; I'd be able to make the change."

Shipley, who was named the Pennsylvania defensive captain on Thursday, played alongside Sales on the line in the requisite 5-2 base defense.

While the defensive backs were focused on attempting to stop Ohio State recruit Ted Ginn, Jr. as he racked up 142 receiving yards, the linemen were focused on pressuring the Ohio signal caller.

"Us linemen, we tried to get as much of a rush as we could," Shipley said. "I got a nice rush, got a few shots on the quarterback. [Ohio] threw the ball 95 percent of the time so I was just trying to work a rush, get some pressure and go from there."

5-2 sets and all-star games concluded, Brown, Sales and Shipley now have all attention turned to their debut on the collegiate stage.

Shipley hopes to "crack the two-deep and try to get onto the field," while Brown and Sales can't wait to unleash their drive to get to the ball.

"We want to get up there and play real intense, that's what a linebacker's about," Brown said. "Playing real intense and getting to the ball."
