The level of criminal activity over the weekend was low, despite the crowds from the 38th Annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, State College Police said yesterday.

Crowds gathered on Beaver Avenue near Canyon Pizza, 260 E. Beaver Ave., throughout the weekend, but officers said the area remained under control and, late Saturday night, had an average weekend crowd size.

"That's what happens when you have a cop every 30 feet," Cpl. Tom Dann said. "You can't get away with anything."

Between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. yesterday, 22 citations were handed out for disorderly conduct, including nine for public urination. Ten citations were handed out for public drunkenness and eight were given for criminal mischief.

Thirty-seven citations for underage drinking were handed out in the same time period. The volume of calls to police was normal, too, police said.

"It's actually pretty slow," Cpl. Mark Argiro said.

The average-to-low number of calls could be due to the increased police presence on the street, Argiro said.

The multiple on-street forces take care of situations before people call the police.

"Friday night was crowded but we had no incidents to speak of," Dann said.

On Saturday, Dann said officers had to ask the crowd surrounding Canyon Pizza to move off of the street and onto the sidewalk six to eight times.

"The people that were down there were very cooperative," Dann said.

Dann said there was no indication throughout the weekend that crowds might become riotous.

"There was no hint of anything like that this year," he said.

Officers said they could not explain why the weekend's activities were very calm.

"It just seems like this year people were a lot more laid back and a lot less argumentative," Dann said.
