In AstroFest, a program that began last night, both parents and their children can experience what it's like to be an astronomer. Chris Palma, director of outreach for the Penn State department of astronomy and astrophysics and co-organizer of AstroFest said the event would be a unique experience for the families in attendance. "We have fun activities and lots of educational stuff that you probably wouldn't see just by going to planetariums," Palma said.
Slot machines are on their way to Pennsylvania, but students hoping to test their luck in Centre County might be disappointed. Penn National Race Course, a horse racing track about 100 miles away, near Harrisburg, will most likely house the nearest slots, two lawmakers familiar with the legislation said yesterday. Gov.
Police will more actively monitor the Beaver Canyon cameras this weekend during the 38th annual Central Pennsylvania Festival for the Arts, marking the first time the cameras have been operational during the festival. This will serve as a change from the day-to-day policy that guides the cameras' use. State College Police Chief Tom King said Tuesday evening in an interview that a supervisor will be at the police station throughout the festival periodically monitoring the cameras.
It's official: in celebration of the Pennsylvania State University's 150th birthday, the University Creamery's new ice cream flavor is Sesquicentennial Sundae. The flavor will be unveiled this afternoon at a kick-off for Penn State's birthday party, which will be celebrated in various ways throughout the year. "The new flavor is delicious," Creamery Manager Tom Palchak said.
The news was more than Darien Hardy could take. Hardy, a reserve cornerback on the Penn State football team, learned in the locker room last season that his father's battle with kidney cancer had taken a turn for the worse. The sophomore was overcome by the news.
Though I wanted desperately to do so, "quit" was the dirtiest verb in my dictionary at the time. Dizzy, sick and pale, my body was fighting a revolution against my brain to make the ridiculousness end. And, for a second, it seemed the former would win.
Respect of Arts Fest visitors best method to deter crime, not Beaver Ave. cameras

Get ready for all the chicken and beer you can stomach as Ludacris rolls out of hometown Atlanta and into the Bryce Jordan Center tomorrow night at 8 p. m. The rapper brings his southern hospitality to Penn State as a stop on his current tour promoting his latest album, Chicken 'n' Beer .
Q: Why does Roustabout! , this town's weekly showcase of original touring indie-bands, have that darn exclamation point in its name? A: Shows like the one on Saturday.
For bands that dream of making it big, Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave. , is offering up "Crowbar Band Battle," a summer-long competition designed to promote the spread of new musicians in the State College area.
So let's get this straight: Spiritualized is not a religious band? Well, not exactly. See, Spiritualized formed in the wake of trance-rockers Spacemen 3, a band whose mantra was "taking drugs to make music to take drugs to.
Freshman year I bought a book called Infinite Jest that was 1000-plus pages long. I read on Amazon. com that the author was similar in nature to one of my then-favorites, Kurt Vonnegut.
How refreshing it is to see that not all superhero movies have to be about mind-numbing action and special effects. To know that movies like Spider-Man 2 , where story takes precedence over spectacular special effects, can still be made in a Hollywood blockbuster-type manner is a load off for both movie and comic book fans everywhere. Perhaps by having novelist Michael Chabon - architect of the brilliant 2000 novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay about a 1940s superhero - write the film's story, the filmmakers were able to breathe fresh life into a character who has been around for more than 40 years.
Thirsty Thursday has met its match. The unofficial first day of the weekend now serves a purpose other than simply quenching one's thirst, thanks to Rock Hard Thursday at Zeno's, 100 W. College Ave.
Boy, was I psyched to see Saved! There's nothing I like better than watching a satirical teen comedy and wallowing in my shared sense of cynicism, especially when the film parodies over-zealous evangelicalism (how taboo). The premise alone is enough to make any cynic drool: a Christian high school student (Mary, played by Jena Malone) finds out her boyfriend is gay, and (with inspiration from Jesus) gives him her virginity in order to save him from the hellfire of homosexuality.
Customers who enjoyed The Cure should also enjoy: The Smiths' The Queen is Dead . Joy Division's Closer .
V-6 or V-10, muscle or street, classic or 2004, four wheels or two, Harley or Honda, welcome to Iron Thunder and Motorhead Madness. On July 10, "motorheads" from across the state will make their way to #1 Cycle Center Harley-Davidson, 107 Yearicks Blvd. , in Centre Hall for the Motorhead Madness event and the Iron Thunder in Happy Valley Fourth annual car and motorcycle show.
I hate crowds. I don't like being stuck in the middle of sweaty people dressed in fluorescent muscle shirts who eat food from French-fried vendors. I don't really like drunk college kids.
