Lolla's canceled, but indie bands

Collegian Staff Writer

You know, maybe Perry was wrong. The best thing about an indie show is the chance to see a world-class band in a place just a little bigger than your living room. This year's "Lolla" might've crashed and burned, but with a bit of planning and some excess gas money, you'll hardly notice.

-- Modest Mouse - Indie success story of the year Modest Mouse just announced an abridged tour to replace their "Lolla" dates. The closest the Cali-centric tour's getting to here is August 10 in Pittsburgh, but it'll be worth the trip.

-- Sonic Youth - For a bunch of old folks, Sonic Youth moved pretty quickly in securing new dates for the summer. Thurston, Kim, and the rest of the group will be in Washington, D.C., on August 11. Bring earplugs. Seriously.

-- The Walkmen - Hey, somebody has to like The Walkmen! If you're in Pittsburgh for Modest Mouse, these moody NYC-rockers will be there the next night.

-- The Rapture - Art punk's greatest band hopped on the goth-friendly Curiosa tour, so if you're really into seeing The Cure and then a bunch of bands that sort of sound like The Cure, maybe you shouldn't have been thinking Lollapalooza in the first place. Still, the group's playing a solo show in between Curiosa dates in Pittsburgh on August 5.

-- String Cheese Incident - Wait, don't go see them.

-- The Von Bondies - People love that garage rock. If you love it so much, why don't you go see it? In Pittsburgh. August 10. Just watch out for Jack White. I hear he's a biter.

-- Siren Music Festival - It's free, it's on Coney Island (they got rollercoasters!), and the lineup is amazing. Trail of Dead, Death Cab for Cutie, The Constantines, Mission of Burma, and Lolla coulda-beens TV on the Radio, just to name a few. With Lollapalooza gone, come July 17 this is where the indie kids will be.
