Greek IDs a means of looking out for selves

In response to the editorial concerning greek IDs ("Greek IDs for parties, downtown discounts hard to truly justify," April 28), I hold an alternate point of view.

I'm not exclusively greek, I have many non-greek friends, and I admire students involved in any organization. Still, I don't see why so many people are opposed to an action that isn't infringing on them in any way. Concerning discounts: If the "Frisbee club" wishes to approach downtown businesses asking for lower prices, then more power to them. If anyone wishes to get the discounts for their own club or organization I suggest they ask their own leaders to talk to businesses, or lobby for the Undergraduate Student Government to get discounts for all organizations. Also, if a greek council wishes to "waste their money and effort" on identification, that is their business; the constituents they govern pay for their service and will criticize unnecessary spending.

Also, as a fraternity member for four years, being able to identify greek affiliations would be of infinite help to our organizations. Often it is very hard to manage social events with only a limited number of people. With events, we host, and we take the risk. No one criticizes someone for regulating entry into an apartment party; why should things be different for fraternities.

Finally, when I came to Penn State, I weighed my choices of student organizations and chose to be greek. If others don't, that's fine. Don't condemn greeks for actions we take on our own behalf.

We're just looking after ourselves. I encourage everyone to do the same.
