Letter to the Editor
Penn State pride from academics, not sports

I think it's interesting how the football team here at Penn State is constantly accused of getting away with everything, yet is held to much higher standards than that of regular students. After reading a letter to the editor titled "Football team's actions embarass Penn State (April 20)," I find it hard to fathom how the actions of any normal student at Penn State could ever reflect that of the entire campus, and I'm wondering why this is the case for our football players.

Are they supposed to serve as "role models" for the student body? Or, are we in fact to blame for placing them on such a pedestal that the mistakes they make reflect the entire school? Furthermore, I am a little concerned for the author that he is "proud to say [he] graduated from Penn State" due to the success of the girls' basketball team. Personally, I'm proud to go to Penn State because it is one of the best schools in the country academically; because my life will now be opened up to so many opportunities; and because so many people struggled and died so that I could go here -- including people who could only get into this school if they played football or some other sport in the first place.

I can't really say that the actions of any one or five or entire team of persons on this campus really affects my feelings toward this school. And I think it's a shame that they would for anyone else.
