Fraternity to go to trial for furnishing alcohol

Sigma Chi fraternity waived its preliminary hearing yesterday and was bound over for trial on a charge of furnishing alcohol to minors. The fraternity is now scheduled for a pretrial conference on May 27 at the Centre County Courthouse, with jury selection set for June 14.

According to court documents, the charges stem from a Feb. 6 incident in which police observed a woman walking with a can of beer along East Hamilton Avenue.

Police said the woman, who was later identified as a 20-year-old Penn State student, told police she had been drinking at the Sigma Chi fraternity house, 400 E. Prospect Ave. She said she was allowed to enter the fraternity and was served alcohol without producing identification.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) President Andy Hackett said the IFC had yet to receive the police report from the incident.

"Once we get the report, we will look into it and open up an investigation if necessary," Hackett said.

According to court documents, police came into contact with the woman during a special enforcement detail using unmarked vehicles. However, the incident happened prior to the enforcement phase of the Source Investigation Project, a program meant to target those who provide alcohol to minors.

Dave Notaro, the president of the fraternity at the time of the alleged incident, would not comment about the charges beyond saying the fraternity had retained a lawyer.
