Trial delayed for student's new lawyer

The preliminary hearing scheduled yesterday for a Penn State student accused of assaulting two police officers was continued until next week after the defendant decided to change his legal counsel.

State College attorney Joseph Amendola will now represent Andrew Porter, the defendant in the case.

Porter said after speaking with Jose Texidor, legal counsel for the Penn State student body, and consulting with several other attorneys, he decided Amendola would be best suited to handle his case.

Amendola could not be reached for comment late yesterday.

Andrew Shubin, the attorney who had formerly represented Porter, would not comment about the decision.

According to court documents, the incident began after Highlands Neighborhood Watch Program interns witnessed Porter and a friend knock over a sign near Pugh Street on March 20.

Two officers sustained minor injuries when a physical confrontation occurred between Porter and State College police.

According to the documents, police said Porter was verbally belligerent and would not turn around when officers attempted to handcuff him.

Police then sprayed him with pepper spray and wrestled him to the ground. Injuries to the officers were sustained in that part of the incident, according to the documents.
