For two sets of sisters, the only non-identical thing in tonight's women's lacrosse game will be the jersey on each of their backs.
Tonight's game between No. 19 Penn State (3-9, 1-2 ALC) and No. 3 Georgetown (9-2) will feature not one, but two sets of twin sisters on each team.
Penn State's junior Emily Chambers and freshman Renee Cipro will be playing for the upper hand at Thanksgiving dinne, as their identical twins Allison Chambers and Laura Cipro visit on the other sideline.
"It's fun," Emily said. "We get really competitive, and I definitely get more psyched to play against someone I know over there. I just want bragging rights for next year."
It hasn't gone so well for Emily in her first two tries against Georgetown, as the Nittany Lions have lost by a combined score of 37-17. Allison has scored five goals and assisted on two more, so Emily hopes that tonight will be the night to even things up.
Emily is currently fourth on the team in points with 19.
"She always brings her 'A' game when she plays me," Emily said. "She gets pumped up too. Everyone makes a big deal about it, so it just gets you excited."
For the Cipro sisters, it will be their first time playing against each other. No matter how much friendly trash talk is flying, the parents are going to be forced to stay quiet.
"It is gonna be a little weird the first time," Renee said. "We've been talking a little trash this past week, so it'll be interesting. I asked my dad [who he is rooting for]. He said he wasn't gonna say anything."
If things had gone the way Penn State coach Suzanne Isidor had planned, she would have gotten all four of them. Both Emily and Renee decided that it would be better to branch out separately.
"It's funny," Isidor said. "The first time, Emily and Ally split up to go to schools that couldn't be more different. It was crazy when Renee and Laura chose the same schools. It's fun though. This game is for bragging rights for the twins, that's for sure."
A win against the Hoyas would not only be huge for Emily and Renee, but also for the whole team, which has endured a tough season. Georgetown is coming off a win against Notre Dame on Saturday. The win clinched its fourth consecutive Big East title. The Hoyas are led by Big East Defensive Player of the Week, goalie Sarah Robinson. This season she is giving up only 6.47 goals per game.
Offensively, Isidor considers Georgetown's attack the best in the country. Junior Sarah Olphinant leads the team with 23 goals. Allison is third on the team in total points with 27.
"It would really heal some of these wounds to come up with a big win," Isidor said. "Georgetown has really taken it to us in the past, and they're having a phenomenal year. To beat them would be huge to see that hard work finally pay off."
Tonight is one of two remaining chances for the Lions to get their first win at home. The twins are expecting all the added emotion to even the gap that separates No. 3 from No. 19.
"They're coming off a couple big wins. We're coming off a few losses, but I don't think that's gonna mean anything," Emily said. "I think we can play with them, and I think we can beat them. It's just whoever wants it more."
