The Dance Team came up with these choices: Penn State Lionettes Dance Team, Penn State Dance Force, and the Penn State Nittany Lion Dance Team.
Driver said this year's competitions encouraged the team to make the change.
"A lot of the other teams have something extra in their name, and adding something to ours will make us stand out a little more," she said.
After the National Dance Alliance nationals this semester, the team sat down and discussed the name change.
Sue Sherburne, dance team adviser, said the national trends encouraged the change. She added that she agrees the name change will help the team in competitions.
"If the team's name more specific, everyone will know that we're the Penn State dance team -- the one that performs at football and basketball games and works with the spirit squad," she said.
Susan Hammond, a dancer on the team, said the team agreed as a whole that the change would be beneficial.
The team decided to open the decision to the student body. "We want the students' input, we want to get the students involved," Driver said.
Students can vote at the Student Book Store, 330 E. College Ave., or online at www.clubs.psu.edu/danceteam until Friday.
The team will announce its new name at the Blue-White game on Saturday.
