Letter to the Editor
Others faced greater oppression than today

Maybe I view the world a little differently than most people, or maybe I just live in a completely different world than everyone else, but I find the comments by Alissa Gazze ("Reader proposes new pageant at Penn State," April 14) completely offensive, and not because of her anger toward Caucasians for prior oppression.

I find it more offensive that she believes anyone of our generation is enduring oppression. I am aware that there are still many inequalities and prejudices that occur, but to liken them to oppression is disgraceful to what prior generations went through. Prior generations endured slavery, segregation and government-sanctioned brutality in the name of racism. These were acts of oppression on a massive scale, not like anything that we see today. Gazze, I ask you to look at the world around you and show some respect for what prior generations have gone through to get us to where we are today. Because in your lifetime, you have never seen oppression and never will, thanks to the hard work of the truly oppressed that came before you.
