Lions will measure progress at tourney
The men's golf team heads to the Midwest to play in the Kepler Intercollegiate.

It may still be two weeks before final exams -- but the men's golf team is already set to be tested this weekend.

Except this test involves playing on one of the best collegiate golf courses in the country, no scantrons needed.

The Nittany Lions are set to face an incredibly competitive field of about 18 teams -- some of which are the best the Midwest has to offer --in Kepler Intercollegiate.

"[This course] requires all aspects of your game," Penn State men's golf coach Greg Nye said. "And it also exposes any weaknesses as well."

Tomorrow and Sunday

The Ohio State Scarlett Golf Course, the place where tomorrow and Sunday's festivities will take place, is unfamiliar territory with the Penn State team. The tournament starts tomorrow at 8 a.m. and continues Sunday at 8 a.m.

According to Nye, a majority of the field is familiar with the facility -- which makes the Lions' test all the more trying.

And the fact that the Lions' practice time was limited this past week due to rain certainly doesn't help matters.

"Our guys have gotten out in the rain," Nye said. "But it's difficult to stay out very long -- they got soaked."

While lack of practice has hurt the Lions a bit this year, there still seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

At two tournaments this year, Penn State improved by eight and nine strokes, respectively, between the first and third rounds of play.

"To see an improvement each day is certainly nice to see," Nye said.

And the Lions certainly hope to improve this weekend as they may just find themselves closer to regionals -- that is, if they can pass the test.
