Letter to the Editor
Collegian's club sport coverage shocks reader

I normally just accept the fact that the sports section in The Daily Collegian is just a front page of baseball, football and other big name sports articles, and the rest is just advertisements. I almost had a heart attack when I saw the words "club baseball" on the front page of Wednesday's sports section ("Big wins, weather hurt rhythm of club baseball pitching staff"). Since when do you report on anything but the big varsity sports?

I am glad to see that a club made the sports section, but I am kind of upset that it is a club that has a varsity equivalent. I think it's great that club baseball is getting recognition, but think about all of the club sports that don't have varsity equivalents: cycling, sailing, boxing, racquetball, etc. I have yet to read a Collegian reporter's article on these sports. Why not throw in a small article a week about these club sports? Since this has often been suggested and never followed up on, I will give you some ideas. The Penn State sailing team is halfway into its spring race season, and it also has an alumni regatta coming up. The Penn State cycling team is currently in 1st place in the ECCC and will be traveling to the Eastern Championships, hosted by the University of New Hampshire on April 24 and 25. These articles will practically write themselves. I am sure one e-mail to any of the officers of these clubs will extract more than enough information on what the club teams are currently doing.

Just put it back there next to the crossword, where all the useless advertising normally goes.
