This letter is in response to William Ames' suggestion that all students should have to take an 8 a.m. class ("Mandatory 8 a.m. class would stop 'problem,' " April 12). Fortunately, Ames, most students do not need "the better part of 13 years" to graduate. Was your temporary address 210 W. College Avenue? I'm not sure what you were doing during those 13 years, but I'm guessing that it is not consistent with the majority of students at Penn State. While you look back with regret on your drinking days at Penn State, I know I will look back and smile. Yes, I did some stupid things, but I also learned from those things. As stories are rehashed after a loopy weekend, I add things to my "do not do EVER again" list.
A mandatory 8 a.m. class is a ridiculous idea. Are we to be punished because we want to have a little fun while we are young? Lighten up! What I would suggest is that people who may be abusing alcohol should go to counseling, or work hard to try and curb their drinking a bit. I am all for responsible drinking, but let's not start to use classes as a punishment. Some of them are already a kick in the teeth.
