Whiplash turns heads with end-of-the-year choreography showcase

For The Collegian

Making a pump-up mix for the gym this weekend? Forget it.

Instead, get some live motivation from Penn State dance group Whiplash's annual end-of-the-year performance, titled Whiplash Whaaat?!

The show will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the White Building and will feature a mix of music and dance.

The show, which should run about an hour and a half, will showcase a diversity of dance styles. Club President Gina Scaduto (junior-secondary education) said she is excited for the performance.

Details: Tickets, which are $3 for students and $4.99 for adults, are available at the door.

"It's so much fun to be in a group that performs in so many styles," she said. "You don't get boxed into dancing one certain way."

The performance will feature a colorful selection of music, ranging from Madonna to Nickelback to Missy Elliot, which will reflect the various forms of dance styles, including hip-hop, jazz, acrobatics, ballet and lyrical styles, Scaduto said.

"All of the girls choreograph pieces that show their style," member Rochelle Giannaula (junior-nursing) said. "In doing so, the show is more diverse and interesting as compared to if one person choreographed the whole show."

With so many other dance groups performing at Penn State, this diversity in style, music and choreography is what Whiplash members said makes the group unique.

Whiplash members rehearse for this weekend's show, which will include ballet, jazz, salsa and hip-hop dance styles.

Started about four years ago by five women, Whiplash has grown dramatically to include 42 members who are narrowed down by a competitive audition process.

The dance group also offers classes that include ballet, modern, hip-hop, African and salsa, among others.

Giannaula, who has been with Whiplash for three years, said she really enjoys the dance group because it allows women from all different dance backgrounds to be able to share their dance experiences with one another.

"I have learned to dance many different styles since I have joined the group, which surprised me, since I have danced for 15 years," Giannaula said.

Vice President Maegan Azpiazu (junior-journalism) has been with Whiplash since her freshman year and has been preparing for the show all semester.

"Each year, our show seems to be turning more heads and gaining more popularity, so hopefully we can keep up the trend this year," Azipiazu said. "The girls have put in so much work preparing for the show this semester, and they're all very talented."

Tickets for this weekend's performance at 132 and 133 White Building are $3 for students and $4.99 for adults, and are available at the door.
