The Lions were looking to extend the same "act of kindness" handed to them by the Dukes of JMU when they won by one stroke on Penn State's home turf this past October at the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational.
The Lions came in looking forward to playing on the par-72 6,046-yard Lakeview Golf Course because of the success they've had there in previously.
Penn State won the event in 2002 and was victorious in four of the last eight coming into this year's tournament.
Though the Lions failed to finish first, they were led by inspired play from their standout sophomores Amber Weinerth and Katrin Wolfe.
Weinerth and Wolfe finished third and fourth, respectively.
Weinerth poured in the best round of her career with a 71 in the second round on Saturday that kept the Lions within striking distance coming into yesterday's round.
The Lions finished the 36th hole on Saturday the same way they wrapped up the 54th hole yesterday, in fifth place.
Inclement weather played a part in the way the tournament finished up for the Lions.
"We we're lucky to finish up in the position that we did," said freshman Betsy Houseman, who had a solid performance yesterday with a 75.
