Mandatory 8 a.m. class would stop 'problem'

I've heard a lot about the drinking problem at Penn State lately. Personally, I am shocked ... shocked that there is underage drinking here!

When I came here 15 years ago, it was much the same as it is now, except the cops protected and served. Still, I had more than my share of fun. I was 21 back then, having gone to a branch campus. But, I think back at the damage excessive drinking did to me, and I can't help but offer a better solution: require every Penn State student to attend 8 a.m. classes. Of course, this would have some logistical problems for proctors, but the net result would force students to make a decision to either flunk out fast or party hardy. I think it would have worked on me, and then it wouldn't have taken the better part of 13 years to graduate. Nothing sobers up a person faster than responsibility. Of course, had somebody let my mother know what goes on up here (God rest her soul), that would have done the trick, too.
