Contests show divide within PSU's campus

OK, so let's say that you take a group of people of one race and put them together. They form some sort of organization and exclude anyone else who is not of their race. Those people are then being racist, correct? If that is considered being racist, then I do not understand how there can be so many groups that do this. I am referring to the article on Mr. and Ms. Asian PSU ("Mr. and Ms. Asian PSU hope to serve community," April 9). Why should I be excluded from this contest if I want to be Ms. Asian PSU? Because you must be Asian? Well, that's discriminating against any Caucasian or African-American person. There is also a Mr. and Ms. Black PSU, and others that I cannot compete in because of my race.

If there are so many different races that have their own Mr. and Ms. PSU, where are Mr. and Ms. Caucasian PSU? There is a regular contest for Mr. and Ms. Penn State, but anyone can enter that contest, no matter what race. The same goes for scholarships and certain organizations where whites are not admitted. Don't get me wrong, I am not racist in any way. I don't even like to describe African Americans by using the word "black." However, being excluded because of the color of my skin makes me a little mad.

I fully support being proud of your heritage, but I think we should get rid of these other Mr. and Ms. PSUs and have one contest that includes everyone of all races and stop some of the discrimination on campus.
