The opinion written by Josh Goldblatt in yesterday's edition ("Morgan's statement shows USG is 'bogus,' " April 6) was the most insightful thing I've read in The Daily Collegian in awhile. I realized that when I turned the page and saw the large, annoying "Are you a bigot?" ad that you printed -- the same ad that I've seen in every building all over this campus for the past several weeks; the same ads which were printed by the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) to, well, do what exactly?
I have no problem with the message that these posters are trying to portray, but you're preaching to the choir. If someone is a racist, they likely came here with that mindset and aren't going to change it. If we want to rid our campus of racism, perhaps we should do more to identify these types of attitudes in applicants before we accept them for enrollment. In the meantime, is this really what we are electing USG members to do? To make sure we don't have bigots at our campus? How about focusing on issues that will actually have significant bearing on student life, like more student parking, lowering underage citations, eliminating sexual assaults, more Loop service on campus, more dining options for late-night study groups, etc.
I know one organization can't save the world, but all of the things that I've listed here have been growing problems for years and little has been done. If USG is supposed to make a difference, these posters are just a key example of how badly they're missing the point.
