"I'm not sure how we even got that label," Camera bassist Joe Dello Stritto said. "People link us with those sort of genres, but those are really just our influences."
Instead, the Camera men define themselves as rock 'n' roll dance pop, influenced by the likes of Motown and The Kinks circa the late 1960s.
"We just play this kind of happy, dancey rock 'n' roll," Dello Stritto said. "We're not trying to consciously write this way; that's just how it comes out."
Sixties British-invasion pop mixed with modern indie rock? Sounds like a perfect candidate for Roustabout!, State College's own weekly indie-rock show at the Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave.
Tonight's Roustabout! will feature weekly veterans The Bullet Parade, along with State College first-timers Camera, and an appearance by DJ Megan Smith from the Indie 500 show on WKPS (90.7) The Lion.
In addition to hosting the group for the first time in State College, tonight's Roustabout! will mark Camera's first college performance to date.
"Yeah, this is our first college show, but I think we'll go over pretty well," Dello Stritto said. "We're used to playing in New York City clubs a lot, but I still think there's going to be a group of kids here that'll be receptive to our music."
Jeff Van Fossan, Roustabout! founder and lead singer of The Bullet Parade, said past bands that have played have had nothing but positive things to say about their Roustabout! experiences.
"Most bands say Roustabout! crowds are very engaging, a lot less jaded than kids from the city," Van Fossan said. "They really think there's a great little scene going on here."
Van Fossan first encountered Camera earlier this year at a movie premiere in Pittsburgh. The film was based on a documentary about the 1960s mod scene, and appropriately enough, Camera played a show following the screening.
"They're really this fantastic band," Van Fossan said. "They can play rock 'n' roll but still make people want to get up and dance."
Camera's energetic style was what ultimately attracted the band to performing in Roustabout!'s like-minded atmosphere.
"What interested us most about Roustabout! was the fact that it sounded more like a party than anything," Dello Stritto said.
Now that they're on board, the guys of Camera have one simple goal for tonight's performance.
"We just want to get the girls and everyone to dance," Dello Stritto said.
