Although I can sympathize with what sounds like frustration from Al Karosas and Bernie Punt of The Bryce Jordan Center (BJC), I have to tell you that it's probably not going to change ("BJC's music scene in peril without students," April 2). Students from my class were calling this one since the BJC's opening day. The venue is great for games and great for the local population and great for family events. But, it absolutely sucks for students. Facts are facts.
Facts are that students like to feel free and fun. At the BJC, the fun stopped at the front door. It seems those who run the center derive their rules on appropriate behavior from Puritanical ideals that moved from 17th century Massachusetts down to the middle of Pennsylvania. Security there is tight. There is no smoking, no drinking, sometimes no standing or dancing. You get the feeling you "are being watched." I would encourage the BJC promoters and staff to focus on family acts and controllable concerts. I'm talking monster truck rallies, wrestling, country music acts and Enya concerts. I mean this with all seriousness.
It's not a great place to go see a Phish show, for instance, or any other rock concert. Students like me, who could never get into the BJC as a major venue, have to be content going elsewhere. People who run the BJC have to realize they are only going to reap what they sow. It's simply an extremely uptight place to go see a show. That just doesn't fly with free-minded PSU students.
