Although the half-hour lunch extension Simmons Dining Hall has been testing has not been successful, Findlay Commons is planning on extending their dinner hours for next fall.

About 175 community representatives -- parents, teenagers, a district justice, law enforcement and drug- and alcohol-treatment professionals -- gathered Thursday and Friday for a two-day conference that marked the beginning of Alcohol Awareness Month 2004.

Penn State Students for Life ended its "life week" with a demonstration Saturday outside State College Medical Services, 900 W. College Ave.

The greek community took its first collective steps to improvement at the "Greek Pride: A Return to Glory" summit last Friday and Saturday.

A 24-year-old man cited for disorderly conduct, public drunkenness and harassment said at his hearing on Friday that he was beaten and restrained by All American Rathskeller employees in a way similar to that which led to the death of Penn State student Salvador Peter Serrano in October.

A New York man was charged with retail theft over the weekend after he allegedly stole $3,000 to $4,000 in merchandise from three area businesses. Police said Carlos Pineros, 40, of Elmhurst, N.Y., is facing three counts each of retail theft and receiving stolen property. He was arraigned before District Justice Daniel Hoffman and placed in Centre County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Student members of a search committee organized in 2003 are concerned about the university's currently vacant Diversity Advocate position.

Write-in candidates won an unprecedented number of seats in last Wednesday's student government elections.

Eleven artists, four hours, a few broken strings and a crowd surfer or two later, three battling bands were chosen Saturday night to perform at this year's Movin' On. Audio Imagery, Scars to Prove and Tailor Made earned coveted side-stage spots at the April 24 music fest.

SPORTS

With the game already in extra innings, Penn State left fielder Scarlett Neal strolled to the plate with the bases loaded, looking for one pitch to hit.

The yells from both benches grew louder as the Penn State women's lacrosse team joined Loyola back on the field following a Nittany Lions timeout.

Saturday's game epitomized the season for the No. 18 Penn State (2-8) women's lacrosse team.

The Penn State men's track team competed against a record 2,200 athletes and several Nittany Lions distinguished themselves from the masses this weekend.

Everyone in the track and field circle has heard of the prestigious Penn Relays, but they may not have heard of the Penn Invitational.

The Penn State baseball club's weekend series with New Penn conference foe Rutgers was postponed because of poor field conditions.

Much like the overhead light that was shattered by an errant tennis ball in the Penn State Tennis Center late in yesterday's match, the early efforts of the Penn State men's tennis team were broken in the end.

With players on the court in several matches that can be longer than an hour, momentum plays a big part in women's tennis.

Athletes are like ducks on a pond. Above the surface they're calm, focused on what needs to be done. But underneath it all, their legs battle to stay afloat.

They call it the hot corner, but for the past few weeks offensive production from third base for Penn State had been ice cold.

If senior middle hitter Keith Kowal of the Penn State men's volleyball team was a baseball player and put together a batting average anywhere near his current hitting percentage, he'd be making more money than he could count.

Despite a heartbreaking fourth-place finish for the Penn State women's gymnastics team Saturday night at the NCAA Northeast Regionals, one team member vaulted herself all the way to the NCAA championships on April 15-17.

Three-tenths means no trip to Los Angeles for the Penn State women's gymnastics team to compete at the NCAA championships in two weeks.

If there was ever a true test of just who were the Penn State baseball team's most committed and passionate supporters, it came yesterday at Beaver Field at around 1:45.

As the Penn State men's lacrosse team cycled the ball around the perimeter, trailing by five goals early in the third quarter, the ball came to midfielder Pat Heim at the restraining line, who appeared open for a shot.

Since its loss to Rutgers-Newark on March 26, the Penn State men's volleyball team has been on a mission to bring its game to the next level. So far, mission accomplished.

For most competitive teams, being ranked No. 5 in the country would result in a large confidence boost and high hopes for the upcoming season.
