Letter to the Editor
Ex-candidate hopes for student service in USG

Before this campaign began, I had no personal experience with the Undergraduate Student Government (USG). Now that the election has blazed by, I can't help but feel completely disoriented. I've read article after article and letter after letter in this paper launching attacks on countless individuals. I can't believe this is what the USG elections have become.

I realize I was quoted in Thursday's issue saying some disparaging things, and I have apologized to Galen Foulke for my comments ("Foulke, Adams elected," April 1). They were in bad taste, and I know that. However, I think the fact that everyone continues to attack everyone else with such animosity is ridiculous. I cite Jonathan Hopta's letter to the editor in which he viciously attacks the Erin Staab and Ivan Baumwell ticket ("Readers react to USG elections, VP Morgan's subsequent outburst," April 2). Personally, I feel that every candidate running for office this year was doing it for the right reason. Hopta pointed out that the motives of Foulke and Adams were not to build a résumé because they are both pre-medicine. I can honestly stand up and say that I am a film major and had no "résumé agenda" when I decided to run, and I don't believe any other candidate did either. I believe every candidate wanted to help USG and the student body.

I plan on pursuing my presidential platform goals despite the fact that I lost this election. I only hope that everyone can take a deep breath and realize why we all ran. We should all move forward now and focus on helping the student body in whatever way we can.

Matt Antonelli
former USG presidential candidate
