Presidential candidates will work hard to serve
Bart Burgess' condescending letter ("Reader voting for 'evil' in tomorrow's election," March 30) showed complete disregard for the hundreds, no, make that thousands of students on this campus who are involved in their community and want to make a difference. I realize that his comments were directed more specifically toward Undergraduate Student Government (USG); however, by saying that executive candidates' goals are impossible, he is making the assumption that no student leaders are capable of getting anything done or have any sincerity. Most of the student body does not see how hard these people work to improve the lives of Penn State students. The "immodest rhetoric" Burgess referred to is simply a way of trying to get people a little more excited about their representation. This is not an easy task, due to apathetic arrogance displayed in his letter that clouds many students' views of USG and other organizations. As vice president of East Halls Residence Association, I've worked very hard all semester to plan fun activities for students in East Halls. With the help of wonderful, hard-working council members, we've gotten a lot accomplished, and we haven't done it to inflate our egos or put it on our resumes. We work for the students that we represent because we care and want to help. It's that simple. The USG candidates are no different. I've met many of them during this elections period, and I have no doubt that no matter what happens, they will all work very hard next year to serve the student body. Good luck to them. Jen Crawford
vice president, East Halls Residence Association
