Alleged drunken driver strikes police cruiser

A State College Police Department vehicle was severely damaged after an allegedly intoxicated motorist traveling the wrong way on West Beaver Avenue struck it early Saturday morning.

Police said State College resident Michelle Isham, 31, struck the police cruiser head on at about 1 a.m. Saturday while it was traveling the correct way on the 100 block of West Beaver Avenue.

The officer activated his emergency lights when he observed Isham approaching. The two vehicles struck each other, causing severe damage that resulted in the police car being towed from the scene. The officer was treated at Mount Nittany Medical Center for neck pain.

Cpl. Tom Dann of the State College police said yesterday that the officer was still experiencing some pain, but Dann would not comment on whether the officer had returned to work. Dann added that there was no damage estimate yet for the police cruiser.

Isham was uninjured in the incident. Her blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit, police said.
