NEWS

This weekend is a special one for those in State College with an affinity for Indian food and culture.

When selling a product or service, it is often helpful to have a catchy commercial jingle that can leave a lasting imprint on anyone's mind.

Federal Pell grants for students across the country would remain at the same levels as last year under President George W. Bush's proposed budget for 2005, but Penn State is still hoping to pressure lawmakers into allocating more money for the grants.

Alumni from the Smeal College of Business Administration who now work on Wall Street have formed a network to help Penn State business students earn internships and jobs.

Many students this week are still trying to find seeds of wisdom planted by professors from before the amnesia-inducing spring break. But graduate students at Penn State are deep in the harvest season, prepping to display the fruits of their labors starting today at the Nineteenth Annual Graduate Exhibition.

A judge yesterday postponed the trial of Christopher and Jason Rosengrant until at least June at the request of their defense attorney who faces a temporary suspension from practicing law by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

The State College Police Department reported yesterday that a sexual offense occurred at 321 Fraternity Row, which is Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. Cpl. Mark Argiro said the offense did not happen recently.

The Patton Township Police Department said yesterday the attempted theft of an ATM from Target, 315 Lowes Blvd., did not actually occur.

Let the "gaymes" begin.

With Marvin Gaye music in the air and a maze of colorful display boards, Penn State's annual Sex Faire attracted more than 200 students to the HUB-Robeson Center's Heritage Hall last night.

An increasing crowd gathers around the HUB-Robeson Center's big-screen TV Sunday afternoon as the attention of bookworms and passersby focus on the screen.

A gun control battle in Missouri recently flooded the Centre County Sheriff’s Office with concealed weapon permits from individuals living there.

The results of a recent borough-wide traffic count, which was conducted in the spring and fall of 2003, might spur the State College Borough Council to address local concerns regarding traffic patterns.

By the year 2040, Hispanics will represent about 25 percent of the American population, Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro A. Cortes said at a forum yesterday.

After five years of research and an estimated $7.2 million, the South Central Centre County Transportation Study (SCCCTS) was stopped by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) on Tuesday due to lack of state funds.

An Internet dating company based out of Austin, Texas has made the dating scene at Penn State a little different for its paying customers.

SPORTS

After four rounds of the NCAA fencing championships, the Penn State women's team finds itself in third place with 48 points.

Brian Gratz, a former member of the Penn State ACHA Div. I Icers, recently signed a contract to play with the ECHL's Johnstown Chiefs, an affiliate of the San Jose Sharks.

Act: New Penn conference opening weekend.

With a home game on the line, the Penn State women's rugby team will travel to Charlottesville, Va., for a possible two-game set this weekend.

Two games this weekend could decide the Penn State men's rugby team's season. The first game will be against West Chester tomorrow and if the Ruggers win, they will face either the Indiana University of Pennsylvania or Navy on Sunday.

Playing against two opponents in the midst of losing streaks can make a team take those games as guaranteed wins. If the Penn State men's volleyball team comes into this weekend with a similar mindset, the games could have negative EIVA tournament implications for the Nittany Lions. Eighth-ranked Penn State (13-5, 6-0) will be in New Jersey this weekend for two EIVA matches as it faces Rutgers-Newark (11-8, 7-2) at 7 tonight and Princeton (10-6, 4-4) at 4 p.m. tomorrow.

It's road trip season.

Well before the season started, Penn State baseball coach Joe Hindelang had an empty weekend to fill with a game before the team's home opener. Having several options before him, Hindelang decided to consult his team before making a decision.

It takes the whole month of March for the madness to subdue and for a clear champion to emerge in the wild world of college basketball.

The Penn State men's outdoor track team opens its season this weekend at the annual Jim Thorpe Invitational. Sort of.

The Penn State softball team will be stepping onto the field at the Hoo's Who tournament this weekend in Virginia as the defending tournament champions. The similarities with last year's Nittany Lions tend to end there.

The Penn State women's tennis team is aiming to contend with two Big Ten opponents as it heads to the Great Lakes State this weekend to play Michigan and Michigan State.

The No. 56 Penn State men's tennis team (6-3, 0-1 Big Ten) recently got a boost in the standings, despite its loss last week to Virginia Tech.

It was all the way back in 1991 that the Penn State women's lacrosse team last beat Maryland. The next year, current Nittany Lions coach Suzanne Isidor began her playing career at Penn State.

At the beginning of the season, it seemed highly improbable that Penn State boxing coach Alex Komlev would decide between two undefeated fighters to pick the team's last boxer at the Eastern Regional boxing tournament.

This is the one for which they endured a hardcore non-conference schedule. This is the reference of this year's program slogan of "Reaching for New Heights." This is the date they have had in mind since last year's season ending loss at this very stage.

ARTS

How much do you really know about zombie logic? Every horror genre has its fans; slasher flicks, poorly-lit German vampire films, even those kitschy '60s B-movies with the eight-headed swamp things. But me, I like zombie movies. A lot.

Stop me if you've heard this one before.

In life, you can't have the good without the bad. It's part of the bittersweet technicality of memory and we have to live with it every day. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind explores what life would be like if we were given the option to erase that which we do not want to remember and brings us face to face with the impact of such a decision.

Jessica Simpson ... Well, at least she's pretty, right?

Last year, everyone I knew with a ticket stub collection and a cone incense burner started telling me about The Bad Plus and about how much the band's debut, These Are the Vistas, was jazz-rocking their world. Being way more about Mingus than Metheny as I am, I was fairly skeptical, but through a lot of unintentional exposure, I came to appreciate The Bad Plus. As instrumental, improvisational hippie music goes, the Plus certainly has its charms.

Taking Lives is doing just that: sucking the life out of moviegoers an hour and 43 minutes at a time.

A simple broken limb has resulted in almost three years of constant agony for 19-year-old Theresa Galvano.

Remember when you weren't swamped with work and actually had someone read books to you? It was a time when reading meant colorful pictures instead of endless facts and subject matters were the adventures of farm animals or talking bears, instead of statistics or molecules.

The Green Design Conference is holding a fundraiser from 6 to 10 tonight at the Hintz Family Alumni Center.
