Jessica Simpson ... Well, at least she's pretty, right?
Simpson is more than a pretty face, though. She's also a source of numerous stupid quotes. But while her intelligence and staying power are constantly questioned, Simpson's vocal prowess is rarely doubted. Simpson sings well, and her latest album, In This Skin, is pretty, but like Simpson, there's little behind that.
The CD was recently re-released with a bevy of bonuses such as remakes of a few songs and a DVD with clips from Simpson and husband Nick Lachey's wedding. While most people walk away from their wedding with some nice flatware, Simpson has taken away a revived career the media continue to resuscitate every five minutes.
Simpson has writing credits on a majority of the album's songs, and maybe that's the problem. The CD's love/sex theme is redundant, and even the attempt at flavoring the songs with different background beats fails.
There are a few highlights to the album, including well-done covers of Robbie William's "Angels" and Berlin's "Take My Breath Away." Simpson's current singles "Sweetest Sin" and "With You" obviously stand out from the monotony of the rest of the album.
But even Simpson's attempt at modesty fails in the title track. With lines like "I know my talent is real" and "I don't have anything to prove," I wonder why I even need to write this review.
Simpson's music should be handled the way Simpson herself should: something to have in the background and make you smile, but not to be taken seriously. But they sure are pretty.
