Style DOs and DON'Ts for a successful season

Collegian Staff Writers

Throw It On

Mini Dresses/Skirts: The latest report is to keep it super-short. Prints, patterns or pleats; anything goes this season. Just take your average mini and take off another two inches.

Colors, Colors, Colors: Look for bold and neon shades of juicy citrus. Mix and don't worry too much about matching. Think Malibu Barbie circa 1986.

Layers: Layers are in, but keep them thin. This spring, two shirts are better than one: polo, t-shirts, tanks, etc. Versatility is key as the weather fluctuates.

Think Pink: Listen up ladies AND gentlemen: This is one trend that applies to all. Pink is hot and hits the spot.

New Vintage: Chill out in new tees and tanks that have a worn-in feel. Random rocks! Look for funky logos, bands and slogans to take your style up a notch.

I Love the '80s: Our worst nightmare five years ago is this season's biggest fashion revival. Try country club prep or rad retro.

Must-Have Accessories: Add one or two unique pieces to make your outfit pop: big earrings, jellie belts, strapless purses, plastic jewelry, big-banded watches and fake flowers.

Throw It Out

Super Flare Jeans: Take the bell out of your bottoms, and flatter your legs with pencil or boot cut jeans.

Platform Shoes: Dude. The Spice Girls broke up five years ago. Get over it. Opt for stilettos if you need an extra boost.

Graffiti Prints: Just say no to vandalism, or get busted by the fashion police. Replace it with paint splatters or tie-dye.

Bare Midriffs: While your 8 Minute Abs tapes collect dust, spend the extra time figuring out how to cover up. Let your legs and shoulders steal the show.

Peasant-Inspired: Exhibit A: Uma Thurman at the Academy Awards. Don't let this happen to you. Think bourgeoisie, and go with stripes or floral patterns instead.

Khaki Cargo: Don't fall into the Gap. Let your individuality show this spring with colorful cargoes.
