When Penn State's all-time hits leader Gina Bianchini graduated last year, the softball team was left in an unfamiliar situation. The team lost its leadoff hitter from four of the previous five seasons and left the Lions wondering what kind of production to expect from the top of their lineup.
Leadoff responsibilities were passed from senior to freshman this season as Jen Williams looks to fill the hole left in Penn State's lineup.
"It's a little hard [to fill in for Gina]," Williams said. "I know what [the team] expected from me. I know I'm not at that level yet but it's a challenge for me to try and get there. I like that part."
Although only a freshman, Williams' numbers tell a different story. She is tied for the team lead in hits with 22, tied for second with seven runs and also sits second with a .293 batting average.
In the Big Ten, Williams' speed has earned a conference leading 14 stolen bases on 17 attempts. It has also made her a steady player in the outfield, getting some time in all three positions but finding herself mostly in centerfield.
However, Williams isn't the only new face making an impact on the team. The only player she trails in batting average is also a freshman, Meghan Wolfer. She has stepped up to fill the second spot in the batting order. She leads the team in batting with an average of .344 and has added five stolen bases. She is also the teammate tied with Williams in hits and runs scored.
Wolfer said when she's on the field she just tries to contribute and do what she can for the team, no matter what it is.
She said she plays every game like she has nothing to lose.
Wolfer has been used mostly as the Lions designated hitter. But she has also been seen playing several of the outfield positions and even had some time playing third base.
Both Williams and Wolfer have been doing everything expected of batters in the top of the lineup. They reach base and move themselves into scoring position for the rest of the team to try and capitalize on.
"Williams and Wolfer have both done a good job of getting on base," Penn State softball coach Robin Petrini said. "We score Williams, but we need to get Wolfer in more."
Both players have made the adjustment from high school to the collegiate level.
They agreed that the pitching is the biggest difference with Wolfer adding this difference makes execution that much more important.
These two freshmen are proving that experience isn't everything as they lead the way this season for the Lions.
