State College Police's efforts lack true focus
I'm sure many people have heard about the recent bust at the Sigma Pi fraternity, 303 Fraternity Row, where roughly 20 police officers spent close to three hours searching and breathalizing more than 200 people ("St. Patrick's Day sees more crime than usual," March 19). I am in no way trying to condone underage drinking, because I am well aware of its consequences; however, I do believe that the State College Police Department made an extremely poor decision by using more than 20 of its police officers to "take down" these "criminals." With the recent incline in assaults and rapes on campus, I think many will agree that instead of focusing on an issue that will never change (I'm willing to bet half of the "offenders" at Sig Pi went back out to party the following night), the department should dedicate the majority of its time to making this place a safer place for its students. Instead of spending one of the most belligerence-filled nights inside a frat house, a highly populated area where most people are with friends, those 20 police officers could have been on Calder Way, the place where many assaults and rapes have taken place over the past two semesters. Yet, no apparent action has been taken to monitor this street. I guess it just comes down to what our law enforcement officials value most. Elizabeth Cilley
