Rugby cruises to 52-5 victory

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State Ruggers got a 52-5 win on Saturday and all their coach could say was that they played "OK."

The Ruggers pummeled the University of Delaware in Newark, Del., dominating in every stage of the game. However, Penn State men's rugby coach Terry Ryland wasn't all that thrilled with his squad.

"It was never a game, but we never played good rugby either," he said. "I saw signs and moments of great rugby in little segments. Our best rugby is still ahead of us. We were making good, not great decisions, and it would turn into a score for us and frustrate them."

The game was moved from Penn State to Delaware due to snow, but the conditions at Delaware weren't much better. It was a windy afternoon on a muddy field. It hampered the Ruggers ability to be quick on their feet and with their hands, as the ball was difficult to hold.

As slow as the conditions made the game, Delaware was still rattled by the defensive speed of the Ruggers. The Ruggers had the Blue Hens contained and forced them to throw the ball around behind the gain line. Delaware would win a ball in a scrum and would have no where to go. Penn State would make two or three tackles and, before they knew it, Delaware was 15 yards behind the gain line.

The Blue Hens inside center weighs close to 220 pounds, and he was evaporated from the game by the Ruggers. Flanker Andrew Kerwin hit him once early in the game, and then Andy and Tim Ryland finished him off. He did not make much noise for the rest of the game.

Penn State hasn't been able to practice much due to the bad weather in State College since January, but showed it was the better team on Saturday.

The endurance and overall fitness of the team helped in the 47-point victory. But the luck could run out in the coming weeks. With Navy, IUP, and most likely Virginia Tech in the final four of the MARFU tournament, Penn State will need to continue to get better.

The Ruggers won't waste much time, with practice scheduled for tomorrow and Thursday on top of a session yesterday.

"The younger kids are hungry for knowledge, asking appropriate questions to make them better rugby players," Ryland said.
