Penn State travels to play Richmond
The baseball team is still getting used to competition and has been hampered by little practice time outside.

The St. Joseph's men's basketball team won 27 straight games this season. The Penn State baseball team has lost five straight.

Maybe it's not a bad idea for Penn State baseball coach Joe Hindelang to use some of St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli's theories when it comes to his own team.

"I heard Phil Martelli say, and I told the team, that we need to be emotionally ready to play at 1 p.m. this Saturday," Hindelang said referring to his team's weekend trip to Richmond to take on the Spiders tomorrow and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Penn State (5-6) will be making some changes as Colin Runt, who, according to Hindelang, took advantage of his two at bats against Arizona last week, will play third base and Scott Gummo will be the designated hitter.

Richmond (11-5) has lost two straight and is led by senior Bobby LeNoir, who is hitting .362 and slugging .500.

Another major problem for the Nittany Lions is their inability to practice outside. Where as teams like Texas, Miami and Arizona can practice outside almost every day of the year, Penn State is stuck inside.

"We do the best we can with the situation," Hindelang said. "But we're not outside."

For now, the baseball team isn't worrying about how cold it is or how many inches of snow are on the ground. Instead it is focused on the weekend and heading south to take on a very good baseball team.
