Collegian made dubious decision to print article
This letter is in response to the outrageously blatant insensitivity of "Police seek link to assault" from Wednesday. I think whoever allowed the printing of this article needs to seriously reconsider his or her capacity to judge what should and should not be printed in a college newspaper. The Daily Collegian is a professional newspaper, and I fully understand that good journalism entails objective truth. But, the fact remains: It's a college newspaper and serves a college community -- and obviously, this community includes its students. Penn State is an enormous school, and putting objective truth above the respect each individual of our community deserves (at a school of 40,000 or 400 undergraduates), especially in such a serious and traumatizing incident, is intolerable and flat out wrong. The article revealed gruesome, explicit details of a private incident for anyone associated with this university to read. Be professional, sure. Be objective, sure. But please, keep in mind that your audience consists of real individuals often living through very difficult times -- and these are your classmates. Joe Segen
