St. Patrick's Day sees more crime than usual

The State College Police Department experienced a high volume of calls for service on St. Patrick's Day Wednesday.

Cpl. Mark Argiro said this year's St. Patrick's day was more criminally active than the last few years.

Between 4 p.m. on Wednesday and 5 a.m. yesterday, police responded to 66 calls, 70 percent of which were alcohol-related.

State College police officers charged nine people with public drunkenness, five people with driving under the influence, eight people with liquor law violations and about 17 people with disorderly conduct.

Police also investigated a sexual assault, a possible assault on Calder Way and a suspected heroin and alcohol overdose.

Pennsylvania State Police made eight underage possession arrests, one arrest for false identification and have charges pending against four adults for furnishing alcohol to minors.

State College Police, with help from Penn State University Police and state police also conducted two Source Investigation Project (SIP) investigations.

SIP was formed in January after the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board gave the police department an $80,000 grant to allow police to thoroughly investigate people who furnish alcohol to minors.

The first of Wednesday night's SIP investigations was unsuccessful.

The second investigation took place at Sigma Pi fraternity, 303 Fraternity Row. State College police obtained a search warrant and once inside the house, officers cited 25 people for underage drinking.

One woman was charged with providing false information to law enforcement after giving several different false names to police.

An investigation into those who furnished alcohol to the 25 minors is ongoing.
