Sometimes history repeats itself.
Unfortunately for the Penn State women's golf team, this was not one of those times.
The Nittany Lions finished in fifth place at the Peggy Kirk Bell Classic after a strong round of play last Tuesday. They won the event last year.
The team competed against 13 other schools and shot a three-round total of 954 at the Tuscawilla Country Club in Winter Springs, Fla.
Team captain Lauren Lundy was satisfied with the team's play, but said the results could have been better.
"It wasn't one of our best performances, but overall it was pretty good," Lundy said.
The Nittany Lions had not competed since Feb. 24, when the team finished in 15th place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. They were scheduled to play in the Edwin Watts Classic in Pinehurst, N.C., at the end of February, but the tournament was cancelled because of a snowstorm. Sophomore Katrin Wolfe shot a team-best 237 and finished in 19th place. Lundy has been impressed with Wolfe's consistent play.
"She has been leading the team pretty much all year," Lundy said.
Some other young players have also stepped into prominent roles on the team. Sophomore Amber Weinerth and freshman Evelyn Paik were not far behind Wolfe Tuesday, as they finished 20th and 24th, respectively. Freshman Maggie Lester also had a strong outing and ended the tournament in 30th place.
Penn State has needed some of the newcomers to step up this year because it has only one senior, and the freshmen have responded with some impressive play. Redshirt freshman Betsy Houseman had nothing but positive remarks about Paik and Lester.
"They're just amazing," Houseman said. "They've done an awesome job. They bring a really good personality to the team."
Despite her strong play, Paik was a little disappointed with her final score in Florida.
"It's one of those tournaments where I think I played well, but the score didn't really add up," she said.
Paik said the course was a challenge to the team because of its layout.
"It's not the easiest course," she said. "It's the type of course where placement is very important. Some holes can be tight. ... It's important where you hit the ball, not just how hard you hit it," she said.
Despite a few struggles, Paik felt the trip was a success for the team.
"We've all had our difficult moments, but we all had a good time and that's what's important," she said.
Houseman found other positives to take from the trip in addition to golf.
"It was just an awesome trip. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. I even came back with a little bit of a tan," she said.
