Four minutes into the overtime, New York freshman forward Tom D'Agostino scored past freshman goalie Dan Koletsky.
Penn State entered the tournament as the No. 3 team in the Northeast and played in Pool A against Miami (Ohio), Colorado State and Central Michigan.
Penn State's first game matched them against Miami. They beat the Red Hawks 4-3. This game was the only test of overtime the Ice Lions had in the tournament before the NYU game. This time they came out on top.
"We feel like we outplayed them. We had the better scoring opportunities," forward Ryan Tocicki said.
Penn State's second game was against Colorado State, and the Ice Lions won 4-2. The Lions used a three-goal first period to propel them past the Rams.
The last game in pool play for the Ice Lions was Central Michigan. The Lions staved off a last-period spurt from the Chippewas to come away with a 3-2 victory.
Staying out of the penalty box was going to be important for the Lions in the tournament. Against NYU, they didn't allow the Violets power play to generate anything on the two chances they had.
"We don't have anything to be ashamed of," Tocicki said. "To come down to the final four definitely exceeded our expectations at the beginning of the season, we just fell short at the end."
New York went on to lose in the finals of the Div. II tournament to Oakland University (Mich.) 5-1. NYU was badly outshot 49-25 in the championship game.
Tocicki and Koletsky made the all-tournament teams. Tocicki, a forward was named to the first team and Koletsky was named to the second team.
