Stolen credit cards lead to local arrest

Collegian Staff Writer

Local police arrested a Maryland man last week for allegedly using stolen credit cards to withdraw about $30,000 from numerous banks in College Township.

Rasheed Williams, 29, of Hyattsville, Md., is facing charges of forgery, access device fraud, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, theft by deception, identity theft and criminal attempt to commit forgery.

He was committed to Centre County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.

According to court documents, at about 12:15 p.m. Thursday, a man later identified as Williams entered the Kish Bank, 129 Rolling Ridge Drive, and attempted to use a credit card to withdraw $4,800.

When a bank teller ran the card number, the computer indicated the card was stolen. Williams then left the bank and attempted to use the card again unsuccessfully at a nearby gas station, according to court documents.

A suspect matching Williams' description was apprehended for traveling the wrong way on West College Avenue shortly after the gas station incident.

Members of the State College Police Department determined that Williams used a fake California identification card and several stolen credit and debit cards from the Maryland area to withdraw about $28,800 from six area banks that morning prior to being denied at the Kish Bank.

An employee with the Smith Barney Fraud Division in Hagerstown, Md., who assisted State College police, also determined that stolen credit cards were used at locations in Bloomsburg, Milton and Lock Haven. Money from the Bloomsburg withdrawals was found in Williams' car, the documents said. Williams told police he chose towns at random to withdraw money to support his pregnant wife, the documents said.
