Gymnastics looks to win on road

The Penn State women's gymnastics team will look to do something it hasn't done all year -- win on the road.

The squad is 0-2-1 on the road, after losing to Pittsburgh last Saturday. The upset dropped Penn State three spots in the rankings, landing at No. 24.

"I think they are ready to go," Penn State women's gymnastics coach Steve Shephard said. "They don't seem down at all. They seem very motivated to get back out there and do what they are capable of doing."

Since the start of the season, Shephard assured his team it could post a high 196 or low 197 with consistency. That hasn't been the case, though, as the Lions are averaging just 195.468. For the Lions, those deduction points are a matter of mental errors and counted falls.

"This weekend, I hope they all stay on the equipment and don't make the same mistakes," Shephard said.

Penn State leads the series with New Hampshire 17-5.

Penn State ranks 16th on the beam and sits at No. 24 among vault competition.

Although the Lions are not nationally ranked in the floor exercise, it has been a strong event for the squad with Kate Stopper's high average of 9.905 on the event.

Stopper ranks 23rd among gymnasts in the floor exercise.

The uneven bars have been the event to make or break the meet for the Lions.

But there's been more breaking than making as the Lions continue to struggle with the event.

"We hope to correct the mistakes and increase our confidence," Shephard said.

"We need to refocus on our goals, which is to win Big Tens and go to nationals."
