The Liars challenge listeners
'They Were Wrong, So We Drowned'

Instructions for making your band, the Liars, "too indie."

Put out a great record. Fuse reckless punk rock, funky rhythms and lo-fi wizardry.

Hold nothing back. Rock hard and fast. Employ catchy choruses. Catchy, not sing-a-long. Make it irresistibly danceable. Knock us to the floor, then drag us back up to keep on dancing.

Experiment. Remember that one.

Tour with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's good for exposure, and Karen O is kinda hot. Get lots of hipster fans. Create a buzz.

Start reading about witchcraft. Get inspired by ancient folklore. Take your band into the woods and perform pagan rituals. Make another album while you're at it.

Pick up right where you left off with that last record: Experiment. Like with its closing song, the one that lasts for about half an hour, two-thirds of which is the same four seconds on loop, while you're in the other room updating your LiveJournal.

Consciously choose to alienate your fans. Abandon rhythm for primitive experimental noise. Employ catchy choruses, where the only words are "Blood, blood, blood!"

Create They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, an album that, for all but a few moments that echo of the last one, is unlistenable.

Don't be dissuaded by critics. Remember that experimentation is good, and so is challenging your listeners.

But come back.

Please.
