Lions look to improve tournament seeding
Penn State is trying not to overlook the Buckeyes, who have struggled.

Collegian Staff Writer

If you asked any player on the No. 10 Penn State men's volleyball team (10-4) what they are most looking forward to this week and they said the Ohio State match, it might not be the entire truth.

With spring break looming, no one would blame the players for looking past the Buckeyes. However, they can't afford to do that because this is one of the most important matches on the schedule. A loss wouldn't help the Nittany Lions' chances of winning a national championship.

"The big importance of this match will be for seeding come May," Penn State senior libero Ricky Mattei said. "If we beat all of the MIVA teams and have a good record against the western teams, we will have a good chance at getting a two or three seed come Final Four time."

Ohio State is the last MIVA team on Penn State's schedule. Ohio State's record is very deceiving. The Buckeyes have yet to beat a quality team this season. The Buckeyes' biggest win is against unranked Rutgers-Newark, but that hasn't stopped Penn State's men's volleyball coach Mark Pavlik from worrying about tonight's game.

"They're a pretty solid blocking team," Pavlik said. "They are tough to beat at home. I expect a very physical match on both sides of the net. We just have to make sure we block well, and we can't throw the ball up and expect Keith [Kowal] to hit us out of situations."

It isn't Ohio State Pavlik should be worried about. It is the possibility of his players overlooking the game because of the 16-day break coming up. Mattei is one player that is at least peeking ahead, but is still focused on the task at hand.

"We got a big break in spring break with no matches," Mattei said. "It would be nice to go into break with a win. We have to take care of business over there."

Mattei will also be looking to add to his dig numbers tomorrow, as he is 33 away from the Penn State record of 820.
