Warm weather melts winter worries

Collegian Staff Writer

The snow may not be all melted, but shorts and sandals are making their March debut in State College.

"It's funny how it's only 50, but everyone is outside and enjoying the sun. It wouldn't be that way in the summer," Derek Bledsoe (sophomore-film) said.

Students filled benches and plazas on campus while basking in the sun yesterday, as the unseasonably warm high temperature was 60 in State College.

Kerry Schwindenhammer, a meteorologist for AccuWeather, said the average temperature for this time of year is about 41 degrees. He added that warm temperatures are expected for the rest of the week.

"The overall trend ... will still be temperatures on the mild side of normal for the next couple of days," Schwindenhammer said.

The record high for yesterday's date was set in 1972 at 70 degrees, Schwindenhammer said.

Robert Shiock (senior-science) sat in front of Hintz Alumni Center yesterday afternoon while reading a book and added that the sun puts him in a better mood.

"I like to get out and enjoy the sunshine and feel the wind through my hair," Shiock said.

While some students enjoy the weather in between classes, Jon Derr (junior-biology) said he likes to skip classes when the weather is favorable.

"It puts me in a better mood to be outside because it's so nice out," Derr said.

After eating outside, Bledsoe and Sara Campbell (freshman-journalism) decided to sit by Willard Building and enjoy the weather.

"We like to eat outside and sit, as opposed to sitting inside when it's snowy," Bledsoe said.

Campbell said she has particular spots on campus that she enjoys the most when the weather is nice.

"I like to walk by Old Main. It's my favorite place," Campbell said.

While eating lunch outside of Old Main, Ravi Bollina (graduate-engineering science and mechanics) and Nick Erhardt (graduate-engineering science and mechanics) said they had the opportunity to visit a different part of campus after being cooped up in their West Campus lab all winter.

"It's the first time we've come over on this side of campus in a long time," Bollina said.

Erhardt added that the nice weather brings happiness to most people who don't enjoy winter conditions, but he, personally, does not mind the cold weather.

"I don't spend time crying indoors because of the weather," Erhardt said.
