I'm writing in response to George Wright's letter, "Same-sex marriages cannot logically exist (March 1)." First, to say that marriages cannot logically exist is illogical. Marriage is a social construct. It was originally designed for men to take possession of women. Religion assimilated marriage into its foundation. Just as Wright said, it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. It makes no mention of Adam and Eve getting married in a cathedral or registering at Pottery Barn, for that matter. Through time, marriage has changed based on society. I am almost certain that Wright will not be paying for his wife with two goats and a bail of hay, as was done centuries ago.
Secondly, homosexuals are not asking God to bless their marriage. The marriages in San Francisco are taking place at the courthouse, not in a church. A church's acknowledgment of same-sex marriages is its own decision. What same-sex couples are asking for is to have the government acknowledge their rights to be a couple and receive the same benefits of any married couple. President Bush's actions to "preserve the sanctity of marriage" is despicable. What if Abraham Lincoln had proposed a constitutional amendment to ban emancipation? Or Woodrow Wilson sought to stop women's right to vote?
What seems to be neglected in Wright's idea of "logic" is that we have a separation of church and state, and that all men are created equal according to the laws of our country.
So, even if you don't believe that same-sex marriages should be recognized under the eyes of God, then at least acknowledge that same-sex couples deserve to be recognized as equals under the eyes of the law.
