Tennis looks to solidify turnaround against Virginia Tech, Old Dominion

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State's women's tennis team has been saying that last weekend's win over Princeton was a turning point.

This weekend will prove whether they have turned things around.

On tap for the Nittany Lions (3-5) are two home matches against teams on losing skids.

Penn State faces No. 58 Virginia Tech tomorrow, then Old Dominion on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Penn State Tennis Center.

"We need to come out strong in doubles, like we did in the Princeton match, and just have great energy," Penn State women's tennis coach Buffy Baker said.

The Lions will catch Virginia Tech (8-3) in the middle of a three-match losing streak. After losing to No. 26 Notre Dame and No. 33 Virginia, it was beaten 6-1 by unranked N.C. State.

Old Dominion (4-5) has lost its last five matches, all against ranked foes including Penn, Virginia and Duke.

Penn State is looking for a little revenge against Virginia Tech and Old Dominion this weekend.

"We lost in tight matches to both these team last years, and we'd like to turn the tables this weekend," Baker said.

The home court advantage could be crucial for the Lions. They have won all their matches at home accumulating a 3-1 record this season. Last Friday's 6-1 loss to Marshall was their only loss in four home matches.

"We play in a four court facility, so we're used to playing marathon matches in there," Baker said. "We've had a lot of great crowds and great energy this season, so that also helps."

0The question remains of whether the Princeton match will become a turning point for the team.

"I would like to think that," Baker said. "It certainly boosted our confidence,"

If the team manages to pull off two wins, it would even its record to 5-5 heading into spring break.
