In response to "University won't utilize logic with CPU firewall (Feb. 26)":
You are not paying the university for usage or access to the Internet. You are supporting its ability to operate, maintain and secure that access, as well as protect your information and school work, which is an incredibly massive expense.
One clear reason for the necessity of such a firewall is students' and others' irresponsibility in the protection of their machines. Many do not use virus protection, and if they do, it is not up to date. Also, I saw countless virus infections occur while at Penn State that never should have happened -- due to lack of knowledge, irresponsibility, ignorance, whatever you want to call it.
Yes, introduction of the firewall may prevent some from completing school work in the manner which they desire. But, it also allows the university to control some kinds of illicit activity, such as the sharing of copyrighted material. Neither of these objectives were the main intent, and will be seen as good points by some and bad points by others. Keep in mind that it's not a democracy.
If you are a freshman, you live without Kazaa for a year. If you are not, move off campus and give your money to Verizon or Comcast.
