Letter to the Editor
Readers react to Bush’s proposed amendment banning gay marriage

The ubiquitous argument in favor of gay marriage reminds me of a child arguing with his parents over the right to stay up late, eat cookies for breakfast or skip school. There are those who say that this is a free country, and everyone has the "right" to do whatever they please, whenever they want. Wrong. Marriage is not a "right"-- it's a privilege. And it is a privilege for a single man and a single woman. Practitioners of incest and polygamy may also think state-sponsored marriage is a "right."

What's next after diminishing the sanctity of marriage by allowing it for members of the same sex? Giving the privilege to first cousins and men who want a dozen wives?

I applaud President Bush for vocalizing such universal Christian beliefs on which our country was founded.
In this time of rampant "political correctness," it's easy to confuse tolerance with complete abandonment of religious, moral or traditional beliefs.
