Penn State women's lacrosse coach Suzanne Isidor said her team sometimes depended too much on Colleen O'Hara last year. For the Penn State men's swimming and diving team, winning the Big Ten championships is not the goal. Losing to a better team is one thing. But when a team loses to itself it makes the loss that much more bitter. Penn State baseball coach Joe Hindelang was in a jam. Penn State and No. 22 Wisconsin basketball fans alike remember the Nittany Lions' 58-57 victory last season at the Bryce Jordan Center. The blue-and-white faithful rushed the court while the Badgers fans hung their heads. They needed an imposing post presence. They got a 6-foot-6 woman who has to make special trips to the "Tall Girl" clothing store in Philadelphia to find jeans long enough for her lanky frame. Every team would love to go undefeated in its conference. With two months left before the EIVA tournament, Penn State has a realistic chance to do just that. On Jan. 4, with the score tied at 62, a foul was called on Michigan State's Lindsay Bowen, sending Penn State point guard Jess Strom to the charity stripe. With 10 seconds remaining, Strom sank both attempts, sealing the 64-62 victory for the Penn State women's basketball team. The Penn State women's track and field squad better know what pressure feels like, because they're about to get a heavy dose this weekend. Penn State goaltender Josh LaGrow tallied just nine minutes of play last season, but in last Saturday's season opener against Ohio State, the junior showcased six of the best minutes in a career that seems to be taking off rather quickly. My Opinion: Sam Cavalieri USG must replace lofty goals with clear, effective execution President Bush has backed a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriages in the United States. What do you think? Is Bush on the right track? Or, is this an act of discrimination?

Every Wednesday at Bar Bleu, 114 S. Garner St., Release hits the stage to the delight of the many students and local residents who show up for the weekly event. One of the most understandable and accessible operas ever composed will soon enchant State College. Valentine's Day may be long gone, but that's no excuse not to treat a significant other or loved one to a romantic, quiet evening away from the drunken debauchery that is State College. With its new album, Save Me, set to be released this spring, Pat McGee Band is revisiting Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave., at 9 p.m. Wednesday with opening act Michael Tolcher, to give fans a preview of what's to come. Though the rock trio formed only four years ago in its hometown of Santa Clarita, Calif., Smile Empty Soul has already started making an influence on local State College bands via the radio airwaves. Art exhibits primarily featuring nude art of the human form roll into the State College area once in a blue moon. Remember the '90s? Is that your final answer?! It's time to forget all previous misconceptions of sketch comedy. Seussical the Musical has got more rhymes than Horton's got gray hair -- and that's a lot, because he's got his share. You know, I never thought about it much, but Dr. Seuss, more than any other nonsensical children's author, really made me into the man I've become. There aren't many life lessons to be gleaned from Green Eggs and Ham (other than to eat everything put in front of you), but on some molecular level, my outlook on life has a lot more to do with Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose than, say, Emerson. Perhaps he got to you, too. May I present a few selections from the Dr. Seuss Library of Philosophy and Multi-Colored Fish: For more than a decade, the volunteers running the Acoustic Brew have given national and local folk acts and aspiring musicians an outlet in Centre County. If you're like most other college students and me, you probably suffer from two common diseases: boredom and procrastination. The Paris Creperie, 616 W. College Ave., a fairly new State College restaurant with a modern, offbeat atmosphere, recently began featuring live music every Thursday and Friday night. Whether the experience lasts four years or longer, a student's time at Penn State surely will be recounted for years to come.
