In reading all the grossly fallacious responses to the white-only scholarship letters ("Readers respond to Feb. 19 article about 'white-only' scholarship," Feb. 20), I'm wondering why those who know the least speak the most and the loudest. For those of you who think that affirmative action is lowering the standards for minorities and giving them scholarships based solely on race, you are disappointingly mistaken. FYI, affirmative action is not a quota because quotas are illegal, except in cases of blatant and extreme discrimination.
Affirmative action, in most cases, is simply recruiting more vigorously to attract a larger number of qualified -- yes, qualified -- minorities. Also, the reason there are race-based scholarships is that there are lots of qualified, intelligent minorities out there who cannot afford college without those scholarships.
Now, I know there are a lot of white people who cannot afford to go to college. But, the proportion to blacks is extremely skewed, and the odds are disproportionately in whites' favor. So, really, stop complaining that blacks are taking your scholarship money and the Hispanics or Asians are taking your jobs, because it doesn't work like that. By the way, affirmative action benefits women more than any other minority. And if a white person were to apply to a black-majority school, he or she would get a minority scholarship, too.
