Bust boredom, AIM monotony with Web sites that take time

Collegian Staff Writer

If you're like most other college students and me, you probably suffer from two common diseases: boredom and procrastination.

And whether you're putting off that six-page paper or stuck wasting time in between classes, nothing serves as a bigger enabler than the Internet.

But chain-checking away messages and e-mail only works for so long, and soon you're drooling in a mind-numbing stupor before your computer screen.

Fortunately, there's www.bored.com, a comprehensive Web site offering dozens of links that feature everything from personality tests and crossword puzzles to free video games and horoscopes.

Here's a short list of some of the best links the site has to offer.

CreateBands

If you're musically challenged but still a wannabe-rocker at heart, this is the site for you.

The site works as follows:

Step 1: Create the name of your band. David Cassidy's Revenge? Uh, sounds wicked.

Step 2: Pick from a list of musicians to play bass, percussion, rhythm guitar and so on. Is it going to be bongos and a funk guitar, or a full drum set with a DJ remix? Your choice.

Step 3: Each musician has a set of five music samples in his or her repertoire. From high tempo keyboard jams to metal guitar riffs, choose the best combination for your band.

Step 4: Nothing sets the stage for a great concert like the atmosphere. Choose the mood lighting and background that will make your group's first performance stellar.

Step 5: Sit back and enjoy as the little live action musicians do all the work for you.

Guess The TV Show or Movie Name

This site's pretty much self-explanatory.

Think of a TV show or movie, then answer some general questions about your choice as the computer tries to guess what you've picked.

Sometimes, it takes the computer longer to guess than others, but somehow it's right every time.

I swear, it's almost magic.

The Rock, Paper, Scissors Game

It's the best of everyone's favorite childhood game, except your hands won't get cramped from playing.

Instead, you simply choose from a set of famous movie characters to duke it out in tension-filled RPS battles.

Will the Terminator beat Ace Ventura? It's up to you and the computer to decide.

Television Without Pity

Didn't make it home from your economics test in time to catch the last episode of The O.C.?

Don't worry, because the couch potatoes at this site not only watched it for you, they also provided an extensive, tongue-in-cheek synopsis that'll bring you up to date.

Besides, most people would take reading about television over reading a textbook any day.

Brain of Brian

Jack Handey isn't the only dumb guy out there making half-baked philosophies.

Ever wonder why yawning is contagious, or suspect that Barney is actually the devil? "Brian," the mysterious creator of this Web site, offers his own spin on life's little-known questions.

In addition to Brian's thoughts, this site also features stupid quotes, useless facts and hilarious top 10 lists sure to somehow make it into your AIM profile.

Here's a good example that I found under a list for the top 10 drinking symptoms:

"SYMPTOM: Floor moving. FAULT: You are being carried out. ACTION: Find out if you are being taken to another bar. If not, complain loudly that you are being kidnapped."
