Letter to the Editor
CATA routes could use redesign, improvement

In these cold wintertime months, I often ride the Blue Loop to the Walker Building, where 95 percent of my classes are. Living on East College Avenue past Garner Street means that the closest Blue Loop stop is at Hiester Street and College Avenue. However, I've come to notice, especially this semester, that the Blue Loop is incredibly crowded in the early mornings prior to 8 a.m. Often, large amounts of people are forced to wait another 10 minutes for another Loop to come, which can cause them to be tardy. The Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) does an excellent job of moving students around campus, and an even better job on campus where the Loops and Links run.

However, just off campus in downtown State College, there is no such convenience from all points on College and Beaver to go either direction by means of multiple routes. In fact, the whole region east of Garner Street is forced to walk to Hiester Street for CATA access to the southwest area of campus via the Blue Loop, where many engineering majors and college of earth and mineral sciences students have class. Perhaps a "Yellow Link" of some sort could run up College Avenue from High Street to west campus, where the Red Link currently turns around. The new Link would then proceed back down Atherton Street and Beaver Avenue to High Street, serving all of downtown off of Route 26.

I can guarantee that such a route would be well received by the downtown community, providing easier access to South and West campus, as well as easing up the Blue Loop bus stops on College Avenue. Perhaps CATA should give it a try.
